When the world is celebrating world literacy day, high percentage of illiteracy is still recorded in Turkana county. The report revealed today during the celebrations, showed that the 2007 survey recorded 9.4% female and 9.7 male illiteracy respectively. Giving the report, the district adult education officer Mr. Dominic Ngoko, said that there is much to done especially by the stake holders to improve the level of education in the region.
At the same time the district officer one for Turkana central, who was the chief guest Mr. levy Senoga urged the parents to take their children to school in order to compete for top positions in the county. However, he said that the top positions will be for people who have qualified in various fields.
The celebrations which were held at Nawoitorong chief's camp was attended by hundreds of people, from Turkana central, Turkana south, Turkana east and Loima districts. During the celebration the chief awarded certificate of merit to 40 graduands from various adult education institutions. It was also attended by the DEO Turkana central Mr. Wycliffe Wamoto, the District Adult Education Officers from the 4 districts.
