Local news – 12.12.2011 - by Zacheaus otaba - Leave brother Louis alone local leaders tell the government

There was an uproar from the public when their leaders complained of the plan to move brother Louis out from heading st. Kevin's secondary school. Speaking during the Jamhuri celebrations today at Moi gardens, theleaders led by lodwar municipality mayor David Kinyonge, they said that st. Kevin's was started by the catholic church, to cater for children who come from poor families.
The move was supported by the area MP Hon Ekwee Ethuro, who said that those who feel that they reforming education in Turkana, should focus on poor performing schools first. On politics, he called for residents to maintain peace during this time when elections are nearing.
At the same time the district commissioner for Turkana central Mr. Humphrey Nakitare has warned politicians of hate speech, saying that they will face the hand of the law. He said that whoever disrupts the peace of the majority is not going to be tolerated in the society. On relief food the DC said that the food that was set for Turkana is still in Kitale cereals board awaiting transportation, which is facing lack of logistics.
The residence also called for the government to boost security in Lorogon, where ken Gen workers have moved away due to poor security. The leaders also called for the police to play their role in protecting people's lives but not harassing them.

Local news – 13.11.11 - By Mary Tioko - Be people of Light: Says Priest

The faithfuls of St. Augustine's Cathedral Parish have been urged to be people of Light. The assistant priest of St. Augustine's Cathedral Fr. Geoffrey Nakutan said this during mass today. He said that during the sacrament of Baptism those baptized receive the light that guides them as they do their day to day activities. He warned that each person will be judged by how he or she has used the gifts given to him or her by God on the last day.
Fr. Nakutan advised the faithfuls to use their talents for the glory of God and neighbors. Fr. Nakutan urged the Christians to exercise their God given talent in whatever field God has given them to do it for the benefit of all in the community. He also said that kindness is a virtue that every noble woman should have in order to maintain her family and bring harmony to the whole society. He said that a woman who is not kind brings disaster to the whole community. The priest made reference to the olden days when people did everything communally challenging the modern technology where people have learned to be selfish and inconsiderate of others welfare.
Fr. Nakutan also challenged the faithfuls to look for focused leaders who are ready to bring new ideas in the county. He said that leaders have to expect resistance from the new generation that has known their rights as compared to the later that they used toss up and down during their campaigns. He urged all to be happy with what they have and look for healthy competition that aspires to explore their God given Talents

local news - 10/11/11 - by Gladys Wamaitha - Pokot bandits attacked and killed one person

One person was killed at Turkwel KenGen camp in Turkana South when
pokot bandits attacked and shot him as he was shopping.
According to Turkana South District Commissioner Mr. Joseph Kanyiri,
the 24 year old Ambrose Lokara was shot dead at around 9 pm when the
bandits attacked the area. DC added that the women who were serving the Lokara were also injured during the incident and were admitted at Kapenguria District hospital.The security forces are pursuing the bandits and no arrest has so far been made.The head of district security committee said he has deployed enough
security personnel to patrol the area and ensure that there is law and
order.In another incident two children and one woman are fighting for their
lives after they were attacked at their Kraals by armed cattle rustlers at Katilu village. The three were transferred to Lodwar district hospital after medical staff at Katilu dispensary had no capacity to handle patients with such injuries.

LOCAL NEWS – 10.11.11 - By Mary Tioko - Ambassador of Chile and Spain visit Radio Akicha

The Ambassador of Spain to Kenya Camira Reda and Ambassador of Chile to Kenya Conrad Polson accompanied by their wives visited Turkana and stoped at Radio Akicha today on their way to Nariokotome Mission where they will spend the next four days in their mission to Turkana.
The Ambassadors of Spain to Kenya Camira Reda said that they have come all the way from Nairobi to Turkana to visit spanish people living in Turkana. Ambassador Redo expressed great concern on the state of the county and challenged all those living and working in Turkana to do more to explore the needs of Turkana people.
Ambassador Camira encouraged the listeners of Radio Akicha to have faith that the general condition of Turkana will improve. His counter part Ambassador of Chile to Kenya Conrad Polson said that he came to see how the county is and see how they can collaborate in ensuring that the projects supported by Chile the country and future areas of collaboration.

Local news – 10.11.11 - By emmanueL Lopus - Soweto and California residents hold a peaceful demonstration

Residents of Soweto and California conducted a peaceful demonstration today from Soweto village via Nzioka street and ended at river Kawalase.
They raised their grievances to the city council of Lodwar. They claimed that heavy rainfall that is hitting the entire Turkana county has made the county to experience floods making the place impalpable.
They also complained that their houses have been swept by floods from river Kawalase and most of them have no where to shelter from rains and colds.One of the resident from Soweto said that they have been seeking for help from the Council and their grievances have not yet been answered .They are now appealing to the Government to chip in and help them since they are Kenyans and they need to enjoy their rights as fully citizens of this country. Transportation from Lodwar town across Kawalase river has become a impassable,and it has affected transportation from Lodwar, Kakuma, Lokichoggio and Kalokol causing some business to stand still in Lodwar town.Furthermore Some KCPE candidates were locked out of exams because they could not cross over.

Local news – 8.11.11 - By Mary Tioko - Turkana community need a market to buy good Political leaders: Says Dr. Aukot.

Turkana Community needs a Market to buy Political leaders who are ready to try new ideas that will liberate the community against all forms of injustices. The Chairman of Electoral boundary commission Dr. Ekuru Aukot said this when addressing the participants of the Diversity Conversations from North Rift at Lodwar Lodge today.
The forum that was facilitated by Commisioner Alice Nderitu (NCIC), Prof. Kimani Njogu (AHADI), and Pro. Olubayi Olubayi from the Global Literacy project who is also the consultant brought together 60 participants from North Rift to deconstruct their past differences so as to construct a shared future.
The participants were to develop a common understanding on the gains and shortcomings towards the realization of peaceful coexistence in kenya, provide an academic resource of choice on ethnicity and race issues in kenya, generate a deeper understanding of how a collective sense of 'we-ness' can be cultivate in kenya to build a body of knowledge on diversity to consolidate platform for implementation of the NCIC mandate, and lastly to inform and influence research based advocacy on ethnicity and form a basis for attitudinal and behavioral change towards embracing diversity leading up to and after the 2012 geeneral elections. Among the speakers of the day were, Mrs. Joyce Emanikor, Chairman NCIC Dr. Mzalendo N. Kibunjia, Prof. V.G. Simiyu, Mr. Dominic Ruto Pkalya and Mr. Bobby Mkangi. The Community was urged to stand up and demand for their constitutional rights.

Local news - By Emmanuel Lopus – 09.11.11 - Supervisors training on polio conducted

Almost 35 supervisors were trained today at Anne Nanjala center on campaign against polio. The training which started at almost 11.00oclock brought together the three M.O.H who were also the facilitators of the training, Dr. Mogoi Donald from Turkana north,Dr. Epem Joseph from Turkana central and Dr. Kiprop Gideon fromTurkana south. The aim of the training was to brief the supervisors on how the campaign against polio will be conducted across the Turkana county at large. The training which is organized by the Ministry of Health and Sanitation and supported by NGO'S will run for three days till Friday and the campaign will start officially on Saturday and Vaccinators will move from house to house.M.O.H for Turkana north Dr. Mogoi speaking with one of the Akicha reporters said that the vaccinators will be looking for any child with paralysis condition.

Local news – 7.11.11 - By Jared Lorot - 38 Christians confirmed at all Saints Kainuk Parish

38 Christians from all saints Kainuk Parish received the sacrament of confirmation yesterday. The confirmations were presided by Rt. Rev. Bishop Dominic Kimengich who was visiting the Parish for the 2nd time in the year.
His lordship said that the sacrament of confirmations is like the sacrament of the Eucharist that strengthens them and opens their own ways to God. He anointed those confirmed with holy oil which strengthens and guides them in their lives. Touching on the Gospel of the day, his lordship urged the faithfuls to leave and abandon the earthly materials, which he said blinds people and prevents them from seeing God.
Bishop Dominic encouraged the faithfuls not to revenge to their enemies for what they have done for them so as to maintain purity in their hearts, peace within them and their enemies since God is against that. He called upon all to live together despite of the tribalism and discrimination. He also asked them to pray to the virgin Mary to intercede for them so as to enter the kingdom of God.
The parish priest of All saints Fr. Javier Gonzalez thanked the bishop for celebrating the mass, presiding the sacrament of confirmation. He gave the breakdown of the existing groups in the parish as follows: 70 registered P.M.C members, C.M.A, C.W.A, and Holiday youth pro-gramme. The parish priest said that they would be having elections of the new officials of the church soon. Assistant parish Priest Fr. Fransisco Trujillo is assisting in food for work distributions and is also helping the church in writing and connections of the power acting like the technician of the parish.

Local news – 7-11-11 -By Mary Tioko -Forgiveness is a virtue that a Christian should have at heart: Says Bishop.

Diocesan secretariat were urged to see God in the simplicity of their hearts as he knows them deep in their hearts and forgive those who wrong them as it is good to have the virtue of forgiveness in their hearts. Speaking during staff Mass at St. Thomas Chapel today, His Lordship bishop Dominic Kimengich said that if someone comes and seeks for forgiveness he or she has to be forgiven.
His lordship said that forgiveness is a very important virtue in life and one cannot continue carrying the burdens of sins. He added that when sins are not forgiven they destroy their health, causes stress to others and they should watch out for those activities that destroy their lives. He said that God does not want the venture of scandalizing other people as when they do something wrong they affect others. His lordship urged the staff to be good role models and should always search their hearts to see if they are doing things that help others or things that destroy them! Bishop Dominic encouraged all the staff to pray for priests to be strong in their Vocation so that they can continue supporting them spiritually.
Bishop Dominic also informed the staff that the priests will be having their retreat at St. Teresa's Pastoral Center for the whole week. He also informed the staff that the silver jubilee of the Diocese will be launched on 8th December 2011 and will continue for a whole year up to 8th December 2012. He said that, Jubilee will be a year of grace so they should ask God to give them strength to co-ordinate activities of the diocese. He urged them to prepare the community towards this important event in the Diocese.

Peter Esinyen - Uwezo Kenya annual National meeting marks its first day

The Uwezo Kenya, meaning capability with target to improve the competence and numeracy children aged 6-16years in East Africa marked first day of its National annual meeting at Bishop Stamm conference centre.This National conference and training of trainers has brought together the staff, trainers and district coordinators in Kenya including the selected participants from Uganda and Tanzania. This is in preparation for the nation survey to be held in February next year.According to this year’s theme literacy for national cohesion, more than 200 participants joined hands together in promoting healthy education in East Africa.
The lead facilitators of the conference Mr. Daniel Wesonga and Joyce Kinyanjui welcomed the participants from the various districts in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania representatives.The key guest are Paul Tergat the record holder Boston marathon, prof. Ruth Oniango the first lady to become professor in western province and Dr. Mzalendo Kibunjia the chair for national cohesion commission.Uwezo Kenya is a four year initiative that aims to improve competence and numeracy children through innovative civic driven and public accountability approach to social change.

NEWS - 23rd Nov. 2011 -Peter Esinyen - Uwezo Kenya National conference and Training of Trainers kicks off its second day


The Uwezo annual conference meeting second day mainly scheduled for launching Uwezo 2012 plan began early today at Bishop Stamm Pastoral centre Kakamega.The opening ceremony began by traditional attire display from various communities represented.The key guest Professor Ruth Oniango, the first lady to become a professor in western province touched on sensitive issues on gender equity on education. She requested the government to support education at all cost and termed politics as a game that does not have a referee. She said a step missed with literacy and numeracy can never be recovered and urged the Uwezo organization movement to continue with an objective of promoting education in East Africa.Speaking to Radio Akicha at the conference, the Regional coordinator Turkana County Deborah Katina said that education process in Turkana County has been hampered by various aspects of Sanitation, teacher shortages, schools infrastructure, feeding program and security issues.She said education players should come on board to bring solutions to the problem facing education process in the county. The regional coordinator said the county can only improve if the county education network can be put in place to set targets to improving literacy and numeracy children aged 6-16 years all over the county. Turkana North has been assessed and already is in the plan.

The Uwezo Kenya 2012 National conference and Training of Trainers marked its end after household survey visit to various villages and communities. According to the annual year theme literacy for National cohesion, more than 200 participants Uganda and Tanzania included met at Bishop Nicholas Stam conference center Kakamega District.Uwezo Kenya an educational initiative targets to improving competence and numeracy children aged 6-16years in East Africa.Household survey enumerators visited various villages and communities in search of pupil’s home lifestyle on numeracy and literacy. A group that landed to Eshinabatende village at Eshisiru location Kakamega central Lurambi constituency and Enumerators at Ingavila village Ikolomani constituency met Christine Shambila and Junior Ombevah.A genuine matter of physical challenge was tabled by Junior Ombevah from Ingavilla village Ikolomani constituency. A boy of 10years who got burned at early age, lost all fingers at the right hand and now as reason to smile as he as hope to live by going back to school and also performing better on arithmetic’s, Kiswahili and social studies.
The same issue was raised by the chief guest Henry Wanyoike at the opening ceremony that he lost his eyesight may 1995 just after walking up one morning. He said one has a chance to succeed to live despite of any disability.Uwezo Kenya is looking forward to promote and foster quality education to East Africa as Mali and Senegal backing the idea, Rwanda and Ghana joining soon.Uwezo Kenya regional meetings all over the country has been scheduled early next year.
