Local news - By ken simuyu – 12.9.2012 - The Government of Kenya has done a lot to reduce disasters in the Country.




The department of disaster risk reduction and response had ended their three day workshop at St,Teresa Pastoralist center in Lodwar. Speaking during the training, the assistant secretary in the department of disaster risk reduction and response Mr. Gordon Omuga said that the workshop aims at bringing about disaster reduction issue which is development issue is to mainstream pro gramme in the development so that they can minimizes the impact of disasters. MR. Gordon also said that the government has done a lot of response to disaster which in the long run is more expensive in damages caused, loss of lives and loss of properties. The pro gramme is supported by the ministry of state for special pro gramme in conjunction with united nation development projects [UNDP] which is a 5year pro gramme that started 2year a go. Mr. Omuga however said that the line ministries that attended the 3day workshop was the 6 Districts commissioners .The in charges of disaster management committees in Turkana region among other respective ministries . The pro gramme is not for Turkana country but it is a pro gramme that runs across the country, global county. district wise to the community level.

Local news – 12.12.2011 - by Zacheaus otaba - Leave brother Louis alone local leaders tell the government

There was an uproar from the public when their leaders complained of the plan to move brother Louis out from heading st. Kevin's secondary school. Speaking during the Jamhuri celebrations today at Moi gardens, theleaders led by lodwar municipality mayor David Kinyonge, they said that st. Kevin's was started by the catholic church, to cater for children who come from poor families.
The move was supported by the area MP Hon Ekwee Ethuro, who said that those who feel that they reforming education in Turkana, should focus on poor performing schools first. On politics, he called for residents to maintain peace during this time when elections are nearing.
At the same time the district commissioner for Turkana central Mr. Humphrey Nakitare has warned politicians of hate speech, saying that they will face the hand of the law. He said that whoever disrupts the peace of the majority is not going to be tolerated in the society. On relief food the DC said that the food that was set for Turkana is still in Kitale cereals board awaiting transportation, which is facing lack of logistics.
The residence also called for the government to boost security in Lorogon, where ken Gen workers have moved away due to poor security. The leaders also called for the police to play their role in protecting people's lives but not harassing them.

LOCAL NEWS – 11.05.2011 - BY ZACHEAUS OTABA - The government will protect its borders, says prime minister

Prime minister Raila Odinga yesterday said that the government will protect all its borders to external attacks from the neighboring countries. Raila who was visiting the county following the Todonyang massacre, addressed people at the Lodwar air strip where he said that the government in two week's time, is going to carry mapping to mark the real boundaries.
The prime minister said that the government has a plan to grow food crops under irrigation scheme on lave Turkana. He agreed that the region has the potentiality of producing food that is enough to feed the whole region. He promised all the Ethiopians who are in the Kenyan land will be moved to their country to reduce cross border conflict. On politics, the PM urged the residents to neglect those who proper gate hatred instead of preaching national peace and unity. He urged Kenyans to be focused when electing future leaders adding that they made a wise decision to approve the constitution. He was escorted by ministers Otieno Kajwang minister for immigration, minister for water Charity Ngilu, ass minister for defense David Musila, minister for labor John Munyes, permanent secretary for special programmes Andrew Mondo, ass minister for forestry Josephat Nanok, among others.
