Local news - By ken simuyu – 12.9.2012 - The Government of Kenya has done a lot to reduce disasters in the Country.




The department of disaster risk reduction and response had ended their three day workshop at St,Teresa Pastoralist center in Lodwar. Speaking during the training, the assistant secretary in the department of disaster risk reduction and response Mr. Gordon Omuga said that the workshop aims at bringing about disaster reduction issue which is development issue is to mainstream pro gramme in the development so that they can minimizes the impact of disasters. MR. Gordon also said that the government has done a lot of response to disaster which in the long run is more expensive in damages caused, loss of lives and loss of properties. The pro gramme is supported by the ministry of state for special pro gramme in conjunction with united nation development projects [UNDP] which is a 5year pro gramme that started 2year a go. Mr. Omuga however said that the line ministries that attended the 3day workshop was the 6 Districts commissioners .The in charges of disaster management committees in Turkana region among other respective ministries . The pro gramme is not for Turkana country but it is a pro gramme that runs across the country, global county. district wise to the community level.

LOCAL NEWS – 19.04.2011 - By Zacheaus Otaba - Kenya children assembly kicks off at St. Luke's home for the deaf.


Children in the Turkana county are assembled at st. Luke's home for the deaf Nakwamekwi, for a three day workshop, where they taken through issues affecting them in their day to day life. The district children's' officer for Turkana central Mr. Sammy Korir, said that it is in the plan of the government to form the Kenya children assembly. Korir said that they are taken through issues affecting children, child rights, forming county children assembly. He said that they are expected elect the county governor, deputy governor and the delegates as per new Constitution. The DCO said that the elected will represent the county in regional meeting to be held later this month in Nakuru. He added that the same delegates will represent the county in the national meeting in August this year. The officer said that children form all over the county were represented apart from those from the East, whom may have been hindered by the distance. He noted that they involved children with special needs like those from kakuma refugee camp, the deaf and the street children from nadir konyen children's home. The programme which is sponsored by the government of Kenya and supported by child fund and diocese of lodwar brought together more 40 children. It is facilitated by the district children's officer, Lutheran world federation, child protection officer DOL and was officially opened by the deputy OCPD Turkana central.
