Local news - 6.9.13 - By Ken Simiyu - International Literacy day was marked today at Kanamkemer Chiefs Camp in Turkana county.


Speaking during the ceremony the adult and continuing Education officer of Turkana county Mr Elisha Okech said that over 6000 learners were registered.
He added that 4000 attend the classes daily in the year 2009 and 2010 at the same time 19 full time teachers were employed by the government. Other partners cooperating with the department include Dioceses of Lodwar, which has 36 classes, Share International has 12 classes and Aphia plus Imarisha sponsored the function.Mr Okech added that teaching and learning materials which are called primers in Turkana Language has been produced and are in Nairobi waiting to be collected.However Mr. Okech said that they have 62 bad time teachers and 24 full time teachers.The challenges included in adequate teaching and learning materials, Human resources, and also delay of the realize of the funds by the government. Up to now 62 bad time teachers have not been paid their honoraria for April and May 2012 and 2013 financial year.
