Residents of Soweto village in Turkana County will soon be relieved from floods following decisions by Child Fund Kenya (CFK), World Food Programme(WFP) and the Government of Kenya to build gabbions in the shores of R. Kawalase to prevent flooding in the next rainy season.
Speaking to Akicha reporter in his office, Child Fund Manager Mr. Peter Lochuch said that, the action is meant to obstruct they the community from the looming danger of floods as one way of disaster preparedness In Turkana county.
Mr. Lochuch also said the same projects have been implemented in Nadoto, Nadapal and kaitese areas. The manager also said that these projects are given out according to felt needs of the various communities and mentioned that , pump installation projects, pasture growing, and irrigation are among other projects given priorities.
Kawalase river has been ranging havoc to the residents, displacing them and also taking away precious lives of people in the area, living them hopeless and depressed.
