Six Turkana
fishermen are missing and they are feared to be dead after they were
yesterday in the morning attacked on the Lake Turkana by Merille
raiders from Ethiopia.
Kibish DC
Erick Wanyonyi said the raiders engaged the fishermen in a fight when
the fishermen were following up on five boats that were taken
yesterday from them at Todonyang. The DC said he had talked to his
counterpart from South Omo area in Ethiopia whose name he gave as a
Mr Maloka who confirmed the fighting and added that one Merille was
also killed and a member of the Ethiopian police.
DC Wanyonyi
said tension is high on the lake after a security delegation from
Kenya visited Omorate in Ethiopia last week and demanded the release
of some fishing nets taken by the Merille and the killing earlier on
of four fishermen. He blamed the Ethiopian authorities for failing to
cooperate with Kenyan security personnel which he said has led to a
lot of lawlessness by the Merille that is contributing to the
insecurity. The DC said they have asked the Ethiopian government to
stop the unnecessary killing of Turkana fishermen and added police
have been taken to patrol to the lake. Turkana North MP Christopher
Nakuleu also complained that the government has not responded
strongly to the killing of Turkana fishermen and said the President
and the Deputy should address the issue.
