Local News – 17.05.2010 - WORK ON THE BRIDGE YET TO START. BY OKOTH PETER and PETER LOKATUR.

Work on the damaged Kawalase bridge is yet to begin. This is in spite of assurance by the Roads Minister, Franklin Bett, on Saturday that the repair would start today. The assurance was made when the Minister toured Turkana to inspect the damaged bridge and Kitale-Lodwar highway by heavy rains.

The Minister appointed Kevin Nyabuto, director at the Kenya Highway Authority (KENHA), as a resident engineer and instructed him to ensure that the work took off as soon as possible.

Our visit today to the site showed no signs of activities going on. Also the materials that were supposed to have arrived today were not yet on site.

However, all the vehicles that had been stranded in Lodwar town have started moving under the control of police who are stationed at the damaged bridge.

Talking to us, one of the residents, Nelson Nyang'a, expressed optimism that the work will start soon and that they will get opportunity to be employed as casuals.
