LOCAL NEWS – 26.10.2010 - by Teresa Kachila - COMMUNITY LED TOTAL SANITATION EXERCISE DONE IN TWO VILLAGES

A workshop on community led total sanitation entered its second day, today at splash Hotel.The workshop which attracted public health officers from Turkana county, Merlin officers led by Wash and sanitation manager Mr. Lucas Edete and Local FM Stations( Maata Fm, Sayare FM, Hossana FM and Radio Akicha. The workshop was organised by the District Public Health officer Mr. Innocent Sifuna and facilitated byMerlin.
Mr. Sifuna and Edete led the participants in community mobilization in construction of latrines in their homesteads. Mr. Sifuna said that it was high time the local community learn to be independent and construct latrines because they are the ones who contract diseases. The community were discouraged from open defeacation and turn to open defeacation free status. Participants cleaned Nadirkonyen and Red banners villages as a pilot exercise on sanitation.
The villagers were shown how they come in contact with the waste without knowing. The triggering has three important aspects to be considred these are to intill fear, disgust and shame so that the villagers can decide on their own to construct latrines. The exercise which involved all the participants was succesful since the villagers decided on an open defeacation free status.
Seven people were chosen from each of the two villages to participate in tommorrows workshop to learn on the Action they have to take in constructing latrines. The three day workshop whose theme was Triggering community led total sanitation will end tommorow.
