LOCAL NEWS - 14.03.2011 -By Zacheaus Otaba - Parents aquinted with basics on sign language at st Luke's home for the hearing impaired

There is need to ensure that the communication between parents and their children who have hearing disability is maintained while out and in school. The manager for St. Luke's home for hearing impaired Mrs. Majuma Wasike said that they are training parents sign language so that to enable them to communicate with their children fluently while they be at home.
She pointed out that people with such disability face a lot of challenges if they have no one to interpret for them. Majuma noted that the home now has a population of more than 130 pupils whom she said are getting their necessities in school. However she urged the parents to give full support to help them fight those challenges.
Speaking during their evening classes, one of the facilitators Mr Isaiah Ekaran said that, the training is scheduled to take one week and they expect to have trained more than 20 at the end of the training. He said that they normally have such like training after every two months and they do take a little number due to the few facilities they have.
He said that they wish to extend the training up to the community around the home.
He pointed out that they normally get support from well wishers and Tere Des home to help them facilitate such programs. Mr Ekaran also high lighted that they are going to award certificates of merit to the trainees after the one week's course.
