Local news - 13.4.11 - By Mary Tioko - Beneficiaries of the Department of Social ministry of the DOL receive food.


The department which started distributing food to the needy and vulnerable people within the vicinity started way back in 2000 with an aim of supplementing the Government effort of providing to the community. The project which was initiated by the Emeritus Bishop Patrick Joseph Harrington of the Diocese of Lodwar has benefited many now 350 beneficiaries in the list and more 1000 unregistered but receive the food. The food distribution which is distributed every Wednesday is also known by the beneficiaries as the “Harrington” derived from the founder Emeritus Harrington! This project was initially done in the compound of the bishop by then before being handed over to the department. The co-coordinator of the programme Mr. Mark Nakain said that the beneficiaries receive one kilogram of beans and one kilogram of maize every Wednesdays for general support to the needy villagers but he said that there is a special group of people who are given 4kgs according to their vulnerability. He also said that the department has various units inside offering the various services to the vulnerable, the social ministry mothers in the shade who comprise of widows and widowers and engage in developmental activities like farming, watering of trees around the compound and weaving under the shade! Nakain said that this group receives 4kgs as food for work. He also noted that HIV/AIDS patients are catered for, they are provided eggs and fruits twice a week every Mondays and Fridays. Mr. Nakain also reported that there is another special group of youth who have been benefiting from the programme run by the Emeritus Bishop Harrington who are given lunch every Thursday. Nakain is thanking all partners for supporting him noting the ministry of Social services and all NGO's working in the county for their support. He wishes them all the best in their work.
