Local news - By Ken and Ghero – 19.07.2012 - FIGHT AGAINST DRUG ABUSE

The youths Empowerment from the Diocese of Lodwar had a 4 day training at St. Teresa Pastoral center that ended today.

The program which was sponsored by the Diocese had 26 youths from different parts of Turkana County. Speaking during the training the diocese of Lodwar Chairman Mr. Francis Ekai said that the main reason of coming up with this program is to train the youths on abstinence and behavioral change.

The chairman also said that the youths should acquire knowledge, skills and attitude of having positive in the daily and also take part in the community responsibility.

Mr Francis also added that their target was youths from all over Turkana county and from different denominations, this include Muslims,Protestants and Roman Catholics.

The youth,s Chairman also pointed out some challenge that most of the youths are facing ,peer pressure,lack of self esteem,conflicts among others. His wish is that these youths who were in the meeting should go down and share the information with the others who were not in the meeting.

Local news - 9th dec 2010 – by Ekeno Sammy - Campaign against drug abuse held at talbot centre in lodwar

Today people from various communities of Lodwar campaigned against drug abuse at TALBOT CENTRE.
Nakwamekwi, Napetet, Kawalathe, Loitakito, Soweto and Kanamkemer. The TALBOT'S co-ordinator, Mr Mike Woods, together with the former drug addict Mr Andrew Lobolia taught people on the negative effects of alcoholism which is due to the illegal brewing such as changaa, busaa, kaada, muratina, kangara and many more.
Woods told them that alcoholism leads to liver cirrhosis,a terrible disease found within the blood and always affects the circulatory system of a human being. He also added that alcoholism leads to road accidents especially to drivers who over drink and forgetting themselves that they are carrying million hearts of people.Alcoholism also leads to poor family status due to improper use of finance hence poverty.
Woods also said that this kind of behaviour causes sexual immorality which later leads to HIV/AIDS and unwanted pregnancy. Woods also concluded by saying that for the greatest killer on this planet is alcoholism,then people need not to drink but only help each other in overcoming alcoholism and besides that,he asked them to pray to God each and every morning they wake up. He also suggested that they should quit drinking alcohol,keep visiting him for counselling and making the right decision in life.The assemblying ended succesfully where Woods urged people to meet once again on Saturday at 10.00am.
