LOCAL NEWS – 21.03.2011 - By Zacheaus Otaba - Turkana county urged to plant trees

People in Turkana county have been asked to plant trees in order to attract good weather. Speaking in his office today, the zonal forest officer Turkana central Mr. Enoch Kilimo, said that since trees attract rain fall, then it is important to plant them, even one at your home or farm and maintain it.
He said that tree planting is a collective responsibility that should not be left for the government only, instead we should take charge and step in to maintain our environment. Mr. Kilimo stated that trees have several importance, saying that we need a cool habitat, acts as water catchment areas and attracts rain fall.
He added that community should personalize the issue of forests' maintenance since it is its own resource. Concerning siting, Kilimo said that big trees around and near houses, should be trimmed to reduce its branches which may lead to its falling during heavy winds.
Mr. Kilimo appreciated the work that is done by the diocese of Lodwar in maintaining environment, by promoting tree planting in schools and urged the schools to use the stimulus funds to maintain their forest farms.
