A one week mission eye treatment is underway at Lodwar District Hospital by spanish doctors. Speaking to Radio Akicha today at the Lodwar eye camp, Dr. Hillary Rono, an ophthal mologist, said the function is partly to celebrate world sight day which took place a week ago.
He said they have been having a series of activities in eye camps in West Pokot, Trans nzoia and Turkana counties which have been associated with eliminating blindness in Turkana. He added that the cause of blindness in Turkana is Cataracts and Trachoma, commonly known as Lokiir in the local language. Rono further advised the residents of the county, to always ensure that their faces are clean by washing them more frequently.
Many people whose eyes were operated could not hide their joy after they regained their sight.
The activity which brought on board several people from Turkana county was Sponsored and funded by the Spanish Doctors, who do annual eye camps in Turkana and Trans Nzoia counties in collaboration with OAU based in Canada, Merlin, Child Fund and IRC.
The Spanish doctors are planning to give mass treatment as from next year onwards for children to help eliminate Trachoma. They are planning a surgical camp in Kakuma on March next year and they willn also be alternating betwween Lodwar and Kakuma on August and October on that very year.
