Local News – 14.09.2012 - By Kamar Francis - Water management and conservation measures at Loima District.

Farmers from Napeikar and Napak along river Turkwel from Loima district today had their meeting at splash guest house on the issue of environmental, water management and conservation measures. Speaking during the event, the project officer Mr. Francis Mariao narrated on how the irrigation scheme of Napeikar and Napak began saying it was started by Turkana rehabilitation project (TRP) some 20yrs back and now is not working. Mr. Mario noted that the two irrigation scheme for Napeikar and Napak are funded by United state of African development Fund (USADF). Mr. Mariao said that the farmers are entitled to clean and healthy environment and have the collective responsibility to safe guard the environment. Mr. Francis said that, national environmental management authority (NEMA) is always carrying out environmental audits in the areas and monitors all activities that are likely to have significant effect on the environment. He also added that the project implements on food security to make sure that food is produced in Turkana, to curb dependency on relief food. He also reported that few individual farmers that toured pekerra irrigation scheme had learned a lot from there. In spite of keeping livestock in Turkana they have seen the essence of farming in the area.


Local news - By ken simuyu – 12.9.2012 - The Government of Kenya has done a lot to reduce disasters in the Country.




The department of disaster risk reduction and response had ended their three day workshop at St,Teresa Pastoralist center in Lodwar. Speaking during the training, the assistant secretary in the department of disaster risk reduction and response Mr. Gordon Omuga said that the workshop aims at bringing about disaster reduction issue which is development issue is to mainstream pro gramme in the development so that they can minimizes the impact of disasters. MR. Gordon also said that the government has done a lot of response to disaster which in the long run is more expensive in damages caused, loss of lives and loss of properties. The pro gramme is supported by the ministry of state for special pro gramme in conjunction with united nation development projects [UNDP] which is a 5year pro gramme that started 2year a go. Mr. Omuga however said that the line ministries that attended the 3day workshop was the 6 Districts commissioners .The in charges of disaster management committees in Turkana region among other respective ministries . The pro gramme is not for Turkana country but it is a pro gramme that runs across the country, global county. district wise to the community level.

Local sports news - By ken simiyu - 11 /09/ 2012 - Kakumatt mashujaa cup turned into second round.



Kakumatt Mashuja cup resumed at various grounds in Lodwar, Super United Hosted Mahon FC at Nakwamekwi ground. The game was forced in a barren of nil nil draw, the game which was attended by FKF chairman and secretary Mr. Francis Erukudi attracted many fans from Nakwamekwi village and also fans from Napetet, both teams displayed their game and showing the highest level of discipline. Elsewhere state site FC traveled to Kalokol to play against Kalokol Rangers where by they drew 1 -1 kalokol scored their goal through Augustine in the 26 minutes in the first half while state side played a one touch game threatening the defense of Kalokol rangers the mid fielders of state site pumped in more pressure and wales scored a fantastic goal. Other games will be played on 18 and 25 respectively.

local news - 9.9.12 - By Mary Tioko - Bishop welcomes Fr. Damien Eripon to St. Augustine's Cathedral parish.



His lordship Bishop Dominic Kimengich today welcomed officially Fr. Damien Eripon as the Assistant priest of St. Augustine cathedral parish to assist the vicar General in the Pastoral work of the Diocese. His lordship also said that Fr. Damien will be like the canon Lawyer of the Diocese of Lodwar to help in Canon law. In the days readings his lordship urged the Christians to listen to the word of God and put it into practice. He called upon all to proclaim the word of God without fear when teaching others who do not know about it. He added that in the scriptures people took the sick to Jesus to be healed challenging the faithful present to invite others to the church especially those who have back- slided in the word of God. Bishop Dominic said that since one can intercede for others in prayers, they can now be conscious of the faith of other people. He encouraged all to have quest for the word of God. The Bishop also encouraged the Christians to intervene when things go wrong in the community, mentioning the teachers strike saying that teachers have the right to have a just pay but they also have the obligation and duty to serve the young pupils whom they teach in their various schools. Bishop Dominic challenged the parents to take up their responsibilities especially now that the government and teachers have failed in their negotiations, he asked them their stake in this disagreements. He called upon all to be people of high integrity and serve all without discrimination mentioning on the issues of Lodwar towns road repairs that was done in a discriminatory manner giving example of the road leading to Napetet Village that was left without repair at all. Civil servants on the other hand were also challenged to serve and not make money in their various places of duty, so as to bridge the gap of poverty in Turkana and not widen it more.



local sports news – 8.09.2012 - By ken simiyu - KAKUMA MASHUJAA CUP SECOND ROUND KICK OFF.


The second round of kakumatt cup will start on 11\09\2012 in various playing grounds here in Lodwar and at Kalokol. So far six teams have qualified for the next round, Mahon F.C, Super united, Stateside F.C, Nawoitorong Rangers and Kalokol Rangers. Speaking through the phone with Radio Akicha, the F.K.F secretary, Stephen Esibitar said that on 11th of September, Stateside will travel to Kalokol to play against Kalokol Rangers at polytechnic ground and on the same day, Super united will host Mahon F.C at catholic church ground, Nakwamekwi. The other teams shall play on 18\09\2012. Return matches shall be announced later.

Local News - By Ken Simiyu – 6.09.2012 - Empowerment on the importance of birth registration in Turkana County.

The department of birth and death registration in collaboration with World Vision held a training at Nawoitorong Women conference center for empowering the Turkana community on birth and registration. Speaking during the workshop, Mr. Festus Wangele who is in charge of children in the North rift said that many people neglect the registration of birth for their children. Mr. Wangele highlighted the importance of birth registration as the government will find it easy to plan for the children during the budget time. Registration also is the right of the child just it is for the naming and taking of the child to school. Mr. Wangele, however, said that it is easy and recommended for the registration to be done early.
