Local news – 31.10.10 - By Daniel Edaan - 251 STUDENTS CONFIRMED IN KAKUMA PARISH

The Auxiliary bishop Dominic kimengich accompanied by the visiting Bishop of bromore diocese Ireland confirmed 251 students today in the morning at Kakuma Parish. The Students that were drawn from different schools around kakuma parish were confirmed in the colourful mass celebrations where the confirmed students were termed as Christians soldiers and role models for the propagations of Christians faith in their schools and in the entire environment .
Auxilary bishop said that the holy spirit is going to strengthen them and lead them towards doing the will of God through the manifestation of the seven gifts in each one of the following students.
Bishop John MC Areavey of the catholic diocese of bromore Ireland thanked bishop kimengich and all the Christians faithful of lodwar diocese for being strong in their faith .
The visiting prelate together with other guests from Ireland expressed their joy and happiness for the vibrant Christian community of kakuma and kalobeyei parish. The visiting team from ireland promised to cooperate with the diocese of Lodwar in development of faith. Later the team visited kakuma refugee camp and St. Leo boys secondary school in Kakuma where they shared with the school administration and students on ways they can partner and support each other to develop the school and other infrustructure.

Local News – 23.10.2010 -Spanish doctors look forward to eliminating blindness in Turkana count

A one week mission eye treatment is underway at Lodwar District Hospital by spanish doctors. Speaking to Radio Akicha today at the Lodwar eye camp, Dr. Hillary Rono, an ophthal mologist, said the function is partly to celebrate world sight day which took place a week ago.
He said they have been having a series of activities in eye camps in West Pokot, Trans nzoia and Turkana counties which have been associated with eliminating blindness in Turkana. He added that the cause of blindness in Turkana is Cataracts and Trachoma, commonly known as Lokiir in the local language. Rono further advised the residents of the county, to always ensure that their faces are clean by washing them more frequently.
Many people whose eyes were operated could not hide their joy after they regained their sight.
The activity which brought on board several people from Turkana county was Sponsored and funded by the Spanish Doctors, who do annual eye camps in Turkana and Trans Nzoia counties in collaboration with OAU based in Canada, Merlin, Child Fund and IRC.
The Spanish doctors are planning to give mass treatment as from next year onwards for children to help eliminate Trachoma. They are planning a surgical camp in Kakuma on March next year and they willn also be alternating betwween Lodwar and Kakuma on August and October on that very year.

Local News - First solar radio goes to Lomunyen Ekiron


Today Radio Akicha has started the distribution of solar radios to the community. The first radio of this initiative has gone to Lomunyen Ekirion. The Christian community of St. Peter’s, Lomunyen Ekirion, an outstation of St. Augustine’s Cathedral located 80 Km from Lodwar town, has celebrated today the Eucharist in a especially cheerful way. After the celebration of the mass Fr. Angel explained the community how to use the machine and also about the advantages of having a solar radio, which will save them from having to walk so many  kilometres just to get a pair of batteries for their radio. (INSERT) The Small Christian Community has been encouraged to gather around the radio during their prayer meetings so that they can follow Radio Akicha’s evening devotion and other educational programmes. From now on this remote community will be a little bit closer to the world around them. This marks the beginning of a project that is going to distribute more than 150 radios in the different communities and schools in and around Lodwar and going as far as Lorogum, gold, Kangatosa and Kerio.

Local news – 30.10.10 - By Mary Tioko - Deepen your perceptions : Priests told

The Diocese of Lodwar annual priests retreat which was held at St.Teresa Pastoral Center has ended today with mass presided by his Lordship Bishop Patrick Harrington assisted By Fr. John Kizito Manzi. Speaking during the homily the formator of the SMA in Nairobi Fr. Tom McNamara encouraged the priests to have their perceptions deepened. Fr. McNamara invoked the holy spirit to send the gift of wisdom which is the great gift to guide the priests in their pastoral work within the Diocese.
The priest prayed for their deceased brothers in the priesthood who had worked in the Diocese and left good legacies led by the Late Bishop John Mahon. He encouraged the priests to continue with the good example that was left behind and also aspire to live good example behind. He encouraged the fellow priest not to look at the past but focus on tomorrow and also pray for the grace to put into practice all the resolutions of the retreat.
The participants also were urged to thank God for their different vocations, family , priesthood and religious and know that the world is a vine yard of the lord and thus he his their always with them in their sufferings in serving the people of God.

LOCAL NEWS – 24.10. 2010 - By Edaan Daniel - Bishop commissions catechist and confirms many others

Bishop Patrick Harrington together with Fr John Manzi have early today confirmed many Christians and students drawn from schools around Lodwar,at St Augustine's Cathedral.
Speaking during his homily the prelate pointed out that today being a mission Sunday all are called to serve God and preach the good news to all people. His Lordship pointed out that Turkana is a big country that requires committed teachers and catechist who can teach the Catholic faith well. He commissioned catechist Phi lemon Lokol as a catechist in the Catholic Church. He as also asked all Christians to support catechist for them to serve better.
The commissioned catechist thanked His Lordship and all Christians for finding him worthy to serve the church as a catechist. He said he made it through prayer and perseverance. Phi lemon Lokol calls for Christians to serve God.

Local news – 29.10.10 - By Mary Tioko - Diocesan Child Protection Policy Launched

The Catholic Diocese of Lodwar has launched a child protection Policy booklet for the Diocese at St. Teresa Pastoral center today. Speaking during the launching Bishop Patrick Harrington said that the policies are balances and also the boundaries which all the Diocesan personnel including the Priests have to apply in their day to day lives as they offer services within the Diocese. Bishop Harrington encouraged them to be of great influence in their parishes as they are guided by the policies as each priest was given a booklet to guide him.
Addressing the Priests from various parishes within the Diocese after their retreat in the same function the Auxiliary Bishop of Lodwar Bishop Dominic Kimengich emphasized on the policies touching on the church doctrines. The Auxiliary Bishop said that the Diocese has the obligation to cooperate with the state in protecting the rights of children and anybody abusing the children in one way or another will be liable to punishment and dismissal from the clerical role incases of the clergy. Also any Diocesan personnel who abuses these rights faces dismissal from the job and later necessary punishment in accordance to law will be applied.
The Booklet that has the policies and procedures safeguards the children from all forms of abuses. Speaking during the launching, The child protection officer for the Diocese Mrs. Eunice Majuma summarized on the guiding principles where each child shall be cherished, nurtured and affirmed as a gift from God, each child has an inherent right to personal dignity and bodily integrity, all children whatever their gender, culture, race, language, religious beliefs or social status have a right to protection and the principles encourages everyone within the catholic Diocese of Lodwar to have an obligation to ensure that the fundamental rights of children are respected
