Local news .4.8.13.By Mary Tioko. Be careful not to worship Material possessions: Christians told.

Christians at St. Augustine's Cathedral parish today have been warned against elevating material things or possessions in their lives above God thereby reducing themselves to worthless vessels that are enslaved by earthly possessions.

The Diocesan Vicar general Fr. Joseph Ekalimon in his Sunday sermon told the congregation that their life attains meaning only when they recognize that God is the source of true happiness in life and not material things. Fr. Ekalimon told the faithfuls to plan and work hard to acquire wealth but warned them that their work or business should not take over God's place in their lives. Referring to St. Paul's letter to the colossians, Fr. Ekalimon said that God created men to be masters of all that is on the earth and it was not his intention that man should be enslaved by material things.

The Rt. Rev, Ekalimon urged Christians to find time to connect with God in their busy everyday undertakings so that they can become enriched both spiritually and physically. He advised Christians that in order to derive happiness in their daily lives, they should invest in uplifting the lives of others. commenting on the gospel on the story of the rich man ,the priest advised the Christians that their real store of treasures will be secured in heaven at the end of their earthly lives if they leave behind a legacy of adding value to the lives of their fellow human beings.
Fr. Ekalimon also took the opportunity of welcoming the catholic women from St. Mary's Kalokol parish who joined others from St. Augustine's in animating todays mass at St. Augustine's cathedral parish. He encouraged them to keep up encouraging each other in their faith and bring up their families in catholic faith. They were also joined with St. leo's small Christian community.

Parishioners of St. Augustine Cathedral and those in the outstations have been asked to stand firm in their faith and not allow themselves be shaken by the events of the previous week. Lodwar Diocese Bishop Rt. Rev. Dominic Kimengich told the faithful that they should seek refuge in God during this difficult moments and their faith in the risen Christ is all they need to overcome the evil plans of the devil. Bishop Kimengich advised the Christians to avoid exchanging accusations and looking for individuals to blame for the sad events that occurred but instead leave everything to God who is merciful, mighty and the true shepherd of our lives. Rt. Rev. Kimengich reminded the congregation during Mass on Ascension Sunday that as Christians they cannot avoid temptations and persecutions in their every day lives and when faced with challenges they should not despair but ask God for direction on what should be the next course of action. He asked the faithful to especially pray for priests and bishops who are more targeted by the devil in attempts to break their faith and steadfastness in God. “The devil is not asleep and he knows that once he succeeds in making a priest fall then he will manage to lead Christians astray” said Rev Kimengich.
