Turkana
county leaders led by Turkana east Member of Parliament, Hon. Nicholas Nikor
and other local leaders have demonstrated and called for the stop of Tullow oil
company activities due to the rise in insecurity. The leaders demonstrated
today in a bid to catch the national government attention to bring in security
reinforcements in the region claiming that for so long people have been losing
their lives yet the national leaders remain quiet on the issue.
This comes
after insecurity situation in Kapedo turning from worse to critical whereby
yesterday two vehicles belonging G.S.U officers were attacked. 2 people
including a G.S.U inspector and a woman heading to Kapedo were seriously
injured and 4 other people are still missing after yesterday’s attack. This has
now forced Turkana leaders to take action by stopping activities at the Tullow Company
in Lokichar as they can no longer watch their people decrease in number every day.
Speaking to
Radio akicha today, Kapedo area M.C.A, Didmus Chagem said they have decided to
stop oil activities because they believe it is one of the reasons causing the
attacks carried out by bandits suspected to be from Pokot County.
Efforts by
the Kenya wildlife service and the Kenya police choppers in retrieving the 4
missing people were fruitless and until now no one has seen or even heard from
them. The inspector general of police, David Kimaiyo is expected to visit the
region soon to address security issues.
